Vitamin B6 is an essential water-soluble vitamin that performs a wide variety of functions in the body. It is needed for more than 100 enzymes involved in protein metabolism, as well as for red blood cell metabolism. The nervous and immune systems need vitamin B6 to function efficiently, and it is also needed for the conversion of tryptophan (an amino acid) to niacin (a vitamin). Vitamin B6 also helps support normal range blood glucose (sugar) levels. When caloric intake is low the body needs B6 to help convert stored carbohydrates to glucose. Because of its involvement in protein metabolism and cellular growth, B6 is important to the immune system. It supports the health of lymphoid organs (thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes) that produce white blood cells.

The amount of vitamin B6 you need depends on your age. Taking high levels of vitamin B6 from supplements for a year or longer can cause severe nerve damage. Other symptoms of too much vitamin B6 include painful, unsightly skin patches, extreme sensitivity to sunlight, nausea, and heartburn.

The upper limit for vitamin B6 is 100 mg/day.
Vitamin B6 supplements can interact with several medications:

Cycloserine (Seromycin®), an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis, and worsen any seizures and nerve cell damage that the drug might cause.

Certain epilepsy drugs could decrease vitamin B6 levels and reduce the drugs’ ability to control seizures.

Theophylline (Aquaphyllin®, Elixophyllin®, Theolair®, Truxophyllin®, and many others) for asthma or another lung disease can reduce vitamin B6 levels and cause seizures.

If you take any of these medications, you should speak to your health care provider about appropriate dosage of this supplement.
